Some German Roots

August Gerhard Feld (1857-1912) and Anna Thecla Jungerman (1866-1933)

Augsut Gerhard Feld and Anna Thecla Jungerman are our great grandparents being the parents of Bernard “Poppa” Feld. August was born December 12, 1857 in the town of Langen, a parish in Lengerich and Anna was born in 1866 in Soegel. They were part of the mid- to late-19th century German migration to the U.S., specifically an Emslander which refers to those German immigrants from a specific area in western Germany who settled in the mid-West. Most of the immigrants from this area were Catholic.

August Gerhard Feld was a horse breeder in Germany. His immigration documents list his name as Gerhard August Feld, but by the time of the 1900 U.S. census he is listed as August Gerhard. His parents were Johan Clemens Feld and Maria Theresa Pieper. He emigrated from Germany to St. Louis in 1881. On February 12, 1885, he married Anna Thecla Jungerman in St. Louis. Her parents were Johan Jungerman and Maria Anna Feye (or Frey). Anna immigrated to St. Louis in 1883 and her parents came at the same time. August and Anna lived in St. Louis. On the 1900 census, his occupation is described as laborer. Also on that census, August is reported as being able to read, but not write, English and he could speak English. Anna is listed as not being able to read, write, or speak English. August died in 1912 of an aortic aneurysm. Anna died in 1933 of diabetes and arteriosclerosis. August and Anna had five sons and one daughter. Only the two oldest sons married, our grandfather Bernard and John. John Feld married Julia and they had four daughters. The three other sons (Henry, August, and George) were all single and living together at the time of the 1940 US Census. Sons John, Henry, August, and George all died before the age of 60. Anna married Alfred Wulf and had three children. She died in 1965.
