Margaret Alice Heaney Sutton (1870-1918)
Margaret Alice is our great grandmother. She was born in Galway, Ireland to parents Michael Heaney and Ann Hanrahan. As she was from Ireland, the search for records related to her is quite difficult, but a little information is known. The year of her birth is not known with any certainty and has been noted as 1870 or 1873. Her death record from 1918 gives her age as 45, but the 1910 U.S. Census gives her age as 40. There is what appears to be a substitute birth record for her that is recorded in Boston, but giving her place of birth as Ireland in April, 1870.
Margaret did have at least six siblings for which there are birth records: Martin, Peter, James, Denis, Anne, and William. At least three of her siblings, Anne, James, and William, came to Massachusetts. William, who was born in 1878, was living with Margaret and her husband John Sutton at the time of the 1900 U.S. Census. I did not find any further record for William. Anne, born in 1876, married William Rodgers in 1911 in Boston. They were both 35 at the time of marriage; Walter was from Marblehead. I have not found out what became of them.
Margaret immigrated to Boston about 1892. There is an immigration passenger list for 1892 that lists a Margaret Haney of about the right age, but it is uncertain that this is her. Margaret did marry John F. Sutton, also from Ireland. There is a marriage record in Boston for 30 August 1893 for John Sutton and Margaret Henney. Margaret and John had 10 children including our grandmother Mary Ernestine Sutton. Margaret died in 1918 following a cerebral hemorrhage.
