CPL Justin Edwards Abbott (1820-1901)

Justin Edwards Abbott is our second great grandfather by this path: you (Abbott sibling) → RWA → Fred Pemberton Abbott →Arthur Merrill Abbott → Justin Edwards Abbott

Justin Edwards Abbott was born in Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts on April 11, 1820 to parents Benjamin Abbott and Rebecca Boynton. He married Ellen Janet Wilson on May 5, 1845 in Saugus, Essex County, Massachusetts. They had four children: Mary Ellen, Pliney Irving, Alice Jeannette (later Raddin), and Arthur Merrill. Justin Abbott worked as a shoemaker. He served in the Civil War in Company E of the 4th Massachusetts Heavy Artillery. He mustered in August 17, 1864 as a private and mustered out as a corporal on June 17, 1865 in Washington, DC. He was listed as being 40 years old at the time he mustered in which does not fit exactly with his birth year of 1820. The 4th Massachusetts H.A. was stationed mostly in Washington and may not have been in battle. He applied for his pension on October 22, 1890. He last lived in the Soldiers’ Home in Saugus, Massachusetts where he died August 31, 1901. His cause of death was listed as senile asthenia. His grave site is in the Riverside Cemetery in Saugus.
