Philippe Anton Du Trieux (1586-1650) and Susanna du Chesne (1601-1670)
Philippe and Susannah are our 9th great grandparents by this path: RWA → Vera Esler Abbott → William Esler → Anna Van Winkle Esler → William Van Winkle → William Douw → Sarah De Forest Douw → Hendricus De Forest → Sarah Du Trieux De Forest → Philippe Anton Du Trieux and Susanna Du Chense
In an earlier post, I profiled Jesse De Forest the organizer of the Walloon migration to New Netherland in 1624. De Forest did not make the trip himself, but Philippe and Susanna are two who did.
Philippe was born in Roubaix, Nord, Nord-Pas de Calais, France; his parents are not known. Members of the Du Trieux family were Walloons who came from an area of northeast France (present day Belgium). This group became Protestant during the Reformation. Like the English Puritans who came to Leiden, Holland seeking religious freedom, so did many of the Walloons.
Philippe first married Jacquemyne Noirett is 1615 and they had four children. Jacquemyne died with the birth of her fourth child who also died. In 1621, Philippe married Susanna Du Chesne who was from a French Huguenot family. The record of betrothal lists Philippe as a 34 year old widower and Susanna as a 20 year old orphan. Philippe and Susanna had ten children, the first born in Amsterdam before the family migrated to New Amsterdam on the ship New Netherland. Philippe and Susanna and the other Walloon families migrating in 1624 entered into a contract with the Dutch West India Company.
In 1638, Philippe was appointed court messenger by Governor Kieft. He also had a fairly large land patent.
Although I have not been able to locate a reliable account of the events, it is generally reported that Philippe and his oldest son Philippe were both killed by Indians sometime between 1649 and 1653. The actual date and circumstances seem to not be recorded. In any event, Susanna transferred land as a widow in 1653. Susanna is thought to have died between 1660 and 1670.
Susanna and Philippe’s first child born in New Amsterdam was our ancestor Sarah. She married Isaac De Forest the son of the Walloon leader Jesse De Forest.
